From a terrible accident to a broken down car -- the side of the road can be a busy and dangerous place for those responding to an emergency.

But did you know if you don't react right - you could be breaking the law?

Washington's Most Wanted's Myrle Carner and Washington State Patrol Trooper Dan McDonald explain why in this week's Safety Alert.

This week's Safety Alert is about motorists as they travel the freeways. One of the things you may often wonder -- if you see an emergency vehicle parked along the freeway, what should you do?

There are some things you should be thinking about when you see a police vehicle parked along the freeway.

Every year police officers, firefighters, and other emergency responders get seriously injured or even lose their life investigating collisions or assisting disabled vehicles on the side of the freeway.

Because of this, the "Move Over Law" was enacted, which requires motorists to slow down or, if they can, change lanes if they are approaching a stationary emergency vehicle with its lights on.

This applies to police vehicles, fire vehicles, tow trucks, and even any roadside assistance vehicles.

Police are out there every day striving to make Washington's roadways safer. By obeying this law, you can help them stay safe and maybe even save a life.

If you just follow that advice -- the chance of you becoming involved in an accident or causing one is a whole lot less.
