Knight coordinated the sex offender program and has received special training relating to investigative digital video enhancement, forensic and digital evidence gathering and specialized internet crimes and computer investigations.
Lt. Jim Mack wrote to WMW and says, "He has sincere dedication and a desire to catch the criminals and serve the citizens of Lacey. This is recognized each and every day by the quality of work which is conducted."
Lt. Mack provided examples of Detective Knight's dedication:
"Jeremy was the lead Detective in an armed home invasion where the victim was severely pistol whipped about the head and robbed. Two suspects were tracked down to Tillicum. Jeremy coordinated surveillance efforts with other detectives and a short time later the suspects were identified and known to be in the apartment. The two suspects were removed from their apartment and taken into custody. Jeremy obtained confessions from the suspects.
He was the lead Detective in an extortion case where the suspect was threatening to shoot a local business owner and his family. Jeremy coordinated efforts and set up recorded phone taps to obtain the necessary evidence. He then coordinated with Federal Law Enforcement Officers. The suspect was tracked and taken into custody in San Antonio, TX. Detective Knight flew to Texas and interviewed the suspect where he essentially obtained a confession. The suspect waived extradition and was brought back to Washington State where he was convicted and received a lengthy prison sentence.
In August Detective Knight was the lead Detective on a tragic death investigation involving a newborn infant. Detective Knight coordinated efforts and developed enough evidence to arrest the infant's mother for Murder 2. This was a very difficult case due to the loss of an innocent life and all involved made sure that justice prevailed.
Detective Knight assisted two distraught families by tracking down their missing loved ones to out of state locations. A mentally ill female who was trying to starve herself to death was tracked to Tucson, AZ. and another male was tracked to Santa Monica, CA.
In December Detective Knight conducted follow up on a case where a 34 year old adult male was attempting to groom and gain the trust of a 12 year old female. Detective Knight obtained a confession and developed enough information to charge the suspect with communication with a minor for immoral purposes, thus identifying and stopping another child predator."
Detective Knight was the lead Detective on a stranger rape that occurred on the campus of Saint Martin's University in April 2008. The victim was a 20 year old college student.
A break came when Detective Brooks noticed a photo of a similar suspect in custody in the state of Nevada. Detective Knight coordinated with Officer Quinonez who was on light duty to follow up. Once enough evidence was gathered Detective Knight traveled to Nevada to interview the suspect. The suspect is currently in the Washoe County Jail in Nevada. He will be extradited back to Thurston County to face charges of Rape, Robbery and Kidnapping while armed with a deadly weapon.
The victim's father wrote a heart felt letter. Here are some excerpts: "At a difficult time Detective Knight was able to establish a personal bond and help my daughter believe that he would do everything in his power to catch the person who committed this crime".
"I am thankful that your police force has people like Detective Knight"
"There is not one day that goes by that I do not think of my daughter and the help Detective Knight gave to her".
The WMW Allstar award goes to Detective Jeremy Knight. Congratulations!
