KIRKLAND -
A young man is found dead by his roommate over two years ago in Kirkland.
But, something missing from his apartment could be the clue that solves this case.
Washington's Most Wanted's Parella Lewis took on this Murder Mystery.
Corp. Phil Goguen with the Kirkland Police Department has been working the case, and joined her to talk about the case. "When I arrived on scene there was obvious signs of trauma to John's body. With the investigation, I was able to determine that John died from blunt force trauma to his head."
On September 15, 2006, Kirkland police answered a call at John Schuoler's apartment on NE 64th St. "The scene itself was unremarkable. When we came in, we found him laying in bed and the investigation kind of went from there."
The 23 year old had spent the day with friends, which according to those who knew him best, including his step-father Rob, was pretty normal. "He was very personable. People were attracted to him, and wanted to be his friend."
But, his mother, Lani, says he might have been a little too social. "Too nice for his own good. He would take people in that most people would not... constantly bringing new friends into the fold."
Corp. Goguen knows about John's social life as well. "The apartment itself was pretty popular among the older teens and young adults that typically congregated in downtown Kirkland."
John's popularity is making it difficult for investigators to narrow down exactly who had access to his first floor apartment. There was no sign of forced entry, but a motive is clear. "We have people of interest in this case. We are still working our way through this investigation. What we have determined that, in all likely hood, this was probably a burglary that had gone wrong. That the suspect had entered the apartment, without the knowledge that John was home, there was obviously some kind of confrontation, and as a result, John was killed."
And, investigators believe John didn't die right away. "From what I understand from the police, if the paramedics had been called immediately he might have been saved."
His roommate wasn't home at the time, so John's body lay there until around 8 o'clock the next night.
Once they arrived, police found nothing in his apartment was out of place - except for one very important item. "When we're doing the crime scene reconstruction, we were able to find that the backpack is missing, and it's our belief at this point that our suspect used that backpack to transport money, contraband or both from the apartment."
The army-green backpack that may look similar to the one shown in the video, is something that never left John's sight.
investigators now hope it may prove to be the missing link. "If someone saw someone with that backpack shortly after John's death, we would love for them to give us a call and talk to us about that."
Once again, the Kirkland Police Department is looking for a dark green R.E.I backpack that was taken from John's apartment.
If you know someone who has seen it, remembers seeing someone suddenly come into some cash, or simply, anything about the killing of John Schuoler, call: Crime Stoppers: 1-800-222-TIPS
