SEATTLE -
Everyone's heard of Craigslist, but there's a new website that does just about the same thing...without any money changing hands.
Dominic Canterbury is the founder of a free bartering service called www.dibspace.com . He started the website with small businesses in mind - thinking they could turn "down time" in to 'business'
"Like massage therapists, sitting around waiting for those clients to come in, when they could be earning something off of their free time" Canterbury adds that service providers either swap for other services or for 'dibits'.
What's a dibit? Essentially it's fake money used only on Dibspace. For example, a salon owner posts a haircut and color for 50 dibits. Another Dibspace member books that appointment and transfers 50 dibits into the stylist's account. The stylist can then turn around and use those dibits to buy something else. And so it goes...
Canterbury says this point system is just one way his site is more secure than other swap or classified sites like Craigslist. Plus, Dibspace makes you enter your business and background information and your trustworthiness is watched closely by other site members.
By the way, you don't have to run a business to barter on Dibspace. Close to three thousand members have signed up and Canterbury says many are just consumers looking for a good deal in this economy.
